Sydney Super Cup organizers are furious with Scottish giants Rangers for pulling out of the November tournament.
Sydney Super Cup organizers have slammed Rangers for withdrawing from the tournament which was to feature the first Old Firm clash played outside of Scotland.
Following backlash from their fans for agreeing to take part in an event billed as a homecoming for Celtic’s Australian manager Ange Postecoglou, Rangers announced overnight they had pulled out of the November tournament.
“After it became clear the tournament organizers were unwilling to fulfill their commitments to Rangers, we have, with immediate effect, terminated the Club’s agreement with the organisers,” Rangers said via a statement on their website.
The reported alleged unfulfilled commitments include the tournament organizers having refused to refer to the Cup’s now-binned Celtic-Rangers match as an “Old Firm” game.
The match was instead going to be called the “Glasgow Derby” as was Celtic’s preference.
However, Cup co-promoters TEG Sport and Left Field Live said they had “acted in good faith” in organizing the tournament, which also includes A-League teams Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers.
“We were disappointed to wake up this morning to Rangers FC’s statement that it will not be participating in the Sydney Super Cup,” TEG Sport and Left Field Live said in a statement.
“The Rangers board committed to these matches following extensive negotiations over eight months. Seemingly in response to negative fan reaction, they have pulled out of their contracted commitment.
“We have worked closely with all stakeholders to bring this exciting event to Sydney, and we refute any suggestion that we were unwilling to fulfill our commitments to Rangers. We have acted in good faith and have put the event on sale with a great response from fans here.
“In changing their minds, the Rangers board has let down many fans in Australia and the Asian region. We will now consult with our stakeholders before determining our response.”
That response could reportedly be legal action.
The future of the tournament remains unclear. Rangers were to meet the Wanderers at CommBank Stadium on November 16, and Celtic at Accor Stadium on November 20.
Celtic’s tournament also schedule includes a game against Sydney FC at the Sydney Football Stadium on November 17.
