A school was placed into lockdown after a school shooter opened fire at a US elementary school, killing more than a dozen students and a teacher.
A shooting at a Texas elementary school left 14 students and one teacher dead, Gov. Greg Abbott said Tuesday afternoon.
Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, about 96km east of the southern border of Mexico and about 128km west of San Antonio, was placed on lockdown around 11.43am local time after gunshots were heard in the area, the school wrote on Facebook.
Shooter believed to be 18yo man
About a half-hour later, the school reported an “active shooter” at the location who was in police custody by 1:06pm, the Uvalde Police Department confirmed on Facebook.
The governor of Texas, Greg Abbott said the gunman was an 18-year-old man from Uvalde, and “it is believed responding officers killed him”.
“He shot and killed horrifically, incomprehensibly, 14 students and killed a teacher,” Mr Abbott said.
“It’s believed that he abandoned his vehicle and entered into the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde with a handgun and he may have also had a rifle, but that is not yet confirmed according to my most recent report.”
Two children arrived at Uvalde Memorial Hospital dead from apparent gunshot wounds following the incident, a hospital official told the new york post.
14 students, teacher dead
Another 14 students and a man in his 40s were treated at the emergency room either for gunshot wounds or “something related to the incident,” the official said. Of those 14, two were transferred to San Antonio and another patient is waiting to be transferred.
One child and a 66-year-old woman in critical condition were transported to University Health San Antonio, the only Level 1 trauma center for both adults and children in the region, the hospital wrote on Twitter.
All students have been accounted for and a reunification site has been set up at the Willie DeLeon Civic Center. As a result of the shooting, the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District in Texas confirmed they would be canceling all district and campus activities, after-school programs, and events.
